Armenian-Russian air and land communication to be limited, entering EU banned

March 18,2020 19:03

A joint decision made by the governments of Armenia and Russia will be put into effect. According to this decision, air and land communication between the two countries will be limited. This does not include cargo shipments. The spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Anna Naghdalyan, spoke about this at the Armenian Unified Infocenter. According to her, Armenian citizens, their family members, and people who are not citizens but are legally allowed to live in Armenia may return to Armenia.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs calls upon Armenian citizens in countries where Armenia does not have official diplomatic representation to immediately contact the ministry’s hotline, which can also be reached on Viber and WhatsApp. The number is 055620111.

Naghdalyan also said that the Georgian government’s decision to ban the entrance of foreign citizens into Georgia will also be put into effect. However, this decision also does not include cargo shipments. Upper Lars is closed to snow, and its closure does not have to do with the coronavirus and the limitations due to the state of emergency. Naghdalyan said that when the weather improves, the road will open, which will allow Armenian cargo shipments to be transported on that route.

Besides that, the MFA spokesperson also spoke about how the leaders of the EU member states agreed to the plan presented by the EU Council President, which bans the entry of foreign citizens to the EU+ countries, which includes the EU, the Schengen zone, Liechtenstein, Switzerland, Iceland, and Norway for 30 days (it is possible for this to be extended).

There will be a flight from Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt on March 19th, Anna Naghdalyan said. There is no information on when the next flight will be or if there even will be another flight. So, she called upon Armenian citizens in Egypt to take the opportunity and return to Armenia on that flight.

Many countries around the world have declared a state of emergency due to the novel coronavirus outbreak. They have closed their borders and have canceled flights.

At the moment, there are 84 confirmed cases of the coronavirus in Armenia.
