An exchange of views on the COVID-19 pandemic with Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization, is one of the highlights of the meeting of the Standing Committee (*) of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), which will meet on Friday 26 June 2020 by videoconference.
Following the opening of the meeting by PACE President Rik Daems, the parliamentarians will also hold an exchange of views with the Greek Alternate Minister for European Affairs, Miltiadis Varvitsiotis, Chairman of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe. The discussion is expected to focus on Greece’s priorities during its chairmanship and other topical political issues.
Among the debates foreseen during the meeting are lessons for the future from an effective and rights-based response to the COVID-19 pandemic, addressing sexual violence against children (with the participation of Najat Maala N’Jid, UN Special Representative on Violence against Children), promoting access to contraception in Europe, and the observation of the early parliamentary elections in Azerbaijan held on 9 February 2020.
A request for a current affairs debate on “The consequences of a possible Israeli annexation of occupied Palestinian territories” has also been tabled.
