December 08,2020 22:30

Strengthening co-operation between the 47-nation Council of Europe and the 27-nation European Union, including EU accession to the European Convention on Human Rights, will be the focus of a virtual parliamentary hearing to be livestreamed from around 10.30 am CET on Thursday 10th December.

The hearing, organised by PACE’s Committee on Political Affairs and Democracy, will look at the partnership between the two European bodies ten years after the entry into force of the Lisbon Treaty.

The impact on the relationship of the COVID-19 pandemic, developments in human rights, democracy and the rule of law, and how to improve high-level political dialogue will also be among topics discussed, as well as strengthening ties between PACE and the European Parliament in 2021.

Participants include MEPs from various committees of the European Parliament concerned with the topic, top officials from the EU’s External Action Service and the European Commission, as well as the Council of Europe’s Director General of Human Rights and the Rule of Law.

The hearing will contribute to a report on this subject being prepared by Titus Corlăţean (Romania, SOC).
