“As the Prime Minister elected by the people of Armenia, this is my command to all soldiers, officers, and generals. Gentlemen, do your job. Uphold the borders and territorial integrity of the Republic of Armenia. This is my command, and no one can dare to disobey it,” Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan announced a little while ago at Republic Square.
He explained what happened today. “Yes, some people tried to drag our army into this anti-democratic and unconstitutional process, and I have assessed that the statement made by the General Staff was an attempt at a military coup. The people will not allow a military coup to take place in Armenia. Dear people, our army is ours, our beloved and adored. I believe that many generals and high-ranking officers signed that statement at the command of their superiors, essentially. Once again, I only have one thing to say to them: maintain the security of the Armenian borders. You must do your job. The army cannot look back. It cannot look to at the home front. It cannot get involved in domestic political processes. The army must obey the people and the political authorities the people elected. Those who work outside of that logic work against the people, state, and security. I demand that even those officers who have left their places of service return and maintain the security of our country.”
According to Pashinyan, “Unfortunately, the government that gained its wealth at the expense of the army for many years still has several agents in the Armed Forces who must be fired immediately. They are trying to accuse us of treason. Why are there so many people here at Republic Square at the call of a traitor, then? They want to accuse all of these people of treason.”
The General Staff of the Armenian Armed Forces made a statement earlier today demanding Nikol Pashinyan’s resignation. He posted on Facebook that he considered this to be an attempt at a military coup.
