‘Those children were heroes for 44 days, but they were forgotten when the war ended, and now they are only heroes for their parents’: Parents of soldiers demand that their sons be discharged

March 19,2021 23:30

Teresa Grigoryan, along with dozens of other soldiers’ parents whose children are serving in Artsakh, protested in front of the government building. She demanded that her son be discharged. The soldier’s mother said that the soldiers have mental and physical problems after the 44-Day War, but no one cares about them. The government said that the issue is on the agenda and discussions are taking place.

The parents are demanding that their sons be discharged because they went through the terrible 44-Day War and they are unable to serve in areas where they lost friends. The government, according to the parents, wants to shorten their length of service instead of discharging them, but the government is not even doing that.

“They are worthy. Those children were heroes for 44 days, but they were forgotten when the war ended. No one cared about those children’s health conditions, nor did they attempt to see the conditions in which they are continuing to serve. The heroes were forgotten for 44 days, and now they are only heroes for their parents. Only their parents are worried. The state is not doing anything,” Teresa Grigoryan said. According to her, many military bases do not even have basic needs; they are just now installing plumbing and electricity. “Not to mention their mental state. Our children continue to serve in areas where they lost brothers and friends.”

Another parent said that they must be discharged because of the coronavirus. “The children are very vulnerable. Many of them have pain in their shoulders and they had pneumonia. They fought in the rain and snow during the war, and they all need serious treatment, but no one cares. You know how terrible the war was and what they survived, but now, no one is doing anything so that those children can at least feel that they did something worthy for this country. They should discharge our children so that we can take care of them.”

According to the parents, the government always lies to the parents and sends them home whenever they protest, but nothing is being resolved.

According to another parent, Karen Aghajanyan, his son has been serving for eight months and he only saw his son once before the war. “At the end of the day, we are parents and we want to see our children. They went through so much. We want them to at least take a break. They can go back, but they should at least take a break. They are very depressed. They are not receiving any treatment. If elections were to take place now, the government would immediately gather them. Those children need therapy and treatment.”
