The decision to have a high proficiency chess school in Yerevan was made at the recent meeting of the Council of Elders of Yerevan. The new municipal organization will work out educational and sport programs, will reveal the potential of young players, will make it possible to get improved, participate in international tournaments as well as to organize such tournaments and develop chess.
According to the Deputy Mayor of Yerevan Gayaneh Melkom Melkomyan, the negotiations between Yerevan Municipality and Yerevan Chess Federation started in 2020. The goal of the negotiations was to decide on the direction of development. As a result it was decided to found the chess school of high proficiency.
Keeping the format of children and youth’s sport schools gave no chance to develop. The new format makes it possible to involve more efficient coaches, to hold forums, to make use of high technologies and participate in tournaments. The Deputy President of Yerevan Chess Federation Norayr Kalantaryan marked that they set the task to let young chess players become Grandmasters before they get the age of 16.
According to the Grandmaster Rafael Vahanyan, another chess school can open new opportunities and perspectives.
A new generation of chess players is coming and they need to be trained.
The new chess school of high proficiency will have 60-80 pupils. Best chess players aged 10-25 will be taught here. Unlike other children and youth’s schools they will study not for 10 years but for 5-7 years. The studies will be free of charge, the costs will be covered by the community.

The new chess school will function on the bases of the children and youth’s sport school of Kentron district. A larger area will be needed later. According to the specialists, the school will boost chess development and new names will be added to the list of eminent Armenian chess players.
