Is Armenia rejecting Shushi and Hadrut?: Tigran Abrahamyan

August 17,2021 15:50

The situation surrounding Armenia’s borders is a crisis resulting from the ceasefire agreement signed on November 9, 2020, according to which the overall situation has been outlined in general points, but the necessary mechanisms have not been maintained. I Have Honor faction deputy Tigran Abrahamyan spoke about this.

On Tuesday in parliament during an interview with reporters, regarding the situation that has evolved at Armenia’s borders over the past few days, as a result of which the Armenian side has two casualties, Tigran Abrahamyan said that the second reason for this situation is that in the post-war situation, the Armenian side did not initiate the necessary and appropriate measures to uphold the security of Armenia’s borders. “This also shows that the negotiations process, which began on November 9th after the ceasefire was signed, is not going in the direction that was outlined in the post-war period. Azerbaijan has come forth with new offers within this period that seem to be demands that will result in new losses, and in order to reach those goals, Azerbaijan seeks to increase tensions at the border. We must also note that, aside from firing toward different Armenian positions, we have also reached a new level: Azerbaijan is opening fire toward different settlements, which deepens the crisis even further.”

In his most recent interview, President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev criticized Russia for supplying Armenia, which has “come to terms with its defeat,” with weapons, but official Yerevan has not responded to this statement. In response to reporters’ questions about this, Tigran Abrahamyan spoke about Nikol Pashinyan’s statement about how arming Armenia will not threaten the security of neighboring states, and he raised the question of if that means rejecting Shushi and Hadrut. Abrahamyan noted that within the negotiations process, Armenia has not implemented any necessary security measures after November 9th. He considers it obvious that the negotiations are not taking place surrounding one package deal, which is a threat. He was referring to Artsakh’s status, demarcation and delimitation, and the unblocking of routes. The only factor for creating strong positions for Armenia and Artsakh, according to Tigran Abrahamyan, is the modernization of the army and Armed Forces, as well as the maintenance of security measures, regardless of in which direction developments will take place.
