Aravot Daily interviewed human rights activist Vardan Harutyunyan.
- Answering the question about the situation on the Armenian-Iranian road in parliament, Nikol Pashinyan announced that in December of 2020, the RA Armed Forces withdrew to the border inherited from Soviet Armenia and this was done to avoid a new military escalation. Also, in December of 2020, an agreement was reached that the road should be used for the transit of Armenian vehicles and cargo, but since the agreement did not fix the fact of foreign cargo, according to Nikol Pashinyan, in this situation Azerbaijan uses it. Do you know what agreement Nikol Pashinyan is talking about and, in general, what is happening now?
I cannot say anything about the agreements. In fact, they have been closed and continue to be closed to our society. Now, thanks to the actions of Azerbaijan, they are revealed after so long. It can be concluded from Pashinyan’s words that the November 9 trilateral declaration on the ceasefire was not an obstacle for Azerbaijan to continue the war or, more precisely, to move the war to the Armenian-Azerbaijani border. Azerbaijan already threatened us with war on our border. And the Armenian authorities were forced to obey the Azerbaijani dictatorship to avoid possible military clashes. Even today they continue to obey Azerbaijan because the defeat has deprived them of the opportunities to orient themselves, resist, think, and apply countermeasures. Taking advantage of the inability of our authorities, Azerbaijan started demarcation in December last year and successfully implemented it in accordance with its ideas and wishes. It fits freely in the parts and areas that it considers its own. The next step will be the demarcation, again at their behest.

- In the current situation, what else can possibly happen in order to avoid new military escalation and unblock the roads that the government is talking about. Will Armenia be completely blocked and isolated?
Unfortunately, the citizens of Armenia do not know in which sections and what demands Azerbaijan has presented or is presenting. Our authorities are hiding it from us until the moment when it is no longer possible to hide this, when Azerbaijan reveals them with its next action. It would be much better to talk about all this openly and in time. Issues related to the territorial integrity of our country should not be kept secret from us. And the rumors about the unblocking of the roads are meaningless and general. It is not specified how Armenia will be connected with the world through Azerbaijan or Azerbaijani-inhabited territories. To what extent do the steps of the Azerbaijanis in Syunik- which, in fact, are aimed at cutting off the Iran-Armenia connection- fit in the context of unblocking? This proves that the so-called unblocking is a conversation that has no significance for Azerbaijan. The Armenian authorities, who have no opportunity and authority to open any way, are talking more and more about the unblocking.
