“A stereotype we need to get rid of is that war is not possible as long as the Russian peacekeepers are here”: Gegham Baghdasaryan

October 16,2021 12:00

According to Gegham Baghdasaryan, President of the Stepanakert Press Club, what happened yesterday on the Artsakh-Azerbaijani line of contact was not coincidental; it was against the background of developments in the region and beyond, to which Azerbaijan reacted painfully.

During the discussion organized by the Armenian Center for Democracy and Security, Gegham Baghdasaryan spoke about stereotypes that Artsakh cannot get rid of. The first is the political component of security, about which, according to the speaker, both Artsakh and Armenia do not like to talk. According to him, the military component of security is in a deplorable state, but he hopes that we will be able to equip the positions so that it will not be possible to hit six soldiers with one grenade attack.

In this context, referring to the recent assurances of Artsakh Foreign Minister Davit Babayan that war is not possible because the Russian peacekeepers are there. Gegham Baghdasaryan stated that with such thinking, we will not reach a good place, even if the government is convinced that there will be no war in the coming years. The public must be prepared for another scenario. As for causing panic in case of such an attitude, Gegham Baghdasaryan counters that indifference to tomorrow and weakening of self-defense instinct are worse than panic.

Gegham Baghdasaryan does not consider the signals from Russia that the current bases are sufficient for the settlement of the Artsakh conflict to be accidental, given the political component of the settlement from the other side of the world and the preservation of Artsakh’s subjectivity. Gegham Baghdasaryan is concerned that in this difficult situation, there is no political thought in Artsakh, and the parliament and the country’s political leadership are not able to adequately respond to the realities. In order to form a new political agenda, according to him, one must first form a new public agenda, but it is not possible if we say from the beginning that war is not possible as long as the Russian peacekeepers are here. The Russian peacekeepers will leave one day and we must be ready for that situation.
