Suren Sargsyan: “I do not rule out that during a possible Russian-Ukrainian clash, Turkey and Azerbaijan will try to take the corridor in Syunik”

January 21,2022 18:58

International affairs expert Suren Sargsyan stated at the Hayeli press club that the possible Russian-Ukrainian conflict will have serious consequences not only for Russia and Ukraine but also for the entire European regional security system.

“There has never been such an accumulation of troops since World War II, and according to the US think tanks, the conflict is 80-90 percent likely. In the event of a possible conflict, if it is extended, other fronts may be opened against Russia to drain its forces. And I do not rule out that then, Turkey and Azerbaijan will try to break through here and take that so-called corridor in Syunik. This is not ruled out, especially if we take into account that Russia is very busy,” said Suren Sargsyan and expressed confidence that all these risks in Armenia should be assessed.

“However, it should be noted that the Armenian authorities are not currently negotiating with the United States for additional security guarantees, given that escalation is possible only under US pressure, but it is unlikely that Turkey will not be involved in the South Caucasus in terms of the corridor. However, the only country that can put some pressure on Turkey today is the United States, which, I repeat, we do not work with. I consider this a big omission because the risk is really very high and it is very difficult to say how the processes will develop,” the political scientist said.
