How to check the balance of power?

May 05,2022 10:33

The political forces that are now trying to bring about a revolution on the streets have serious shortcomings, they have made big mistakes, both in the past and after 2018. It is clear that many citizens of Armenia have good reasons for not joining the movement. Let me start, as they say, with me. I can not sympathize with a movement in which Robert Kocharyan is directly or indirectly involved. Tens of thousands of citizens can cite this or some other “related” reasons why they refrain from taking to the streets, even though they are not satisfied with the current government’s policies.

But it concerns us, ordinary citizens. The case of politicians and party leaders is different: they are obliged to participate in political processes in one way or another. I immediately put aside those who are, in fact, members of the Civil Contract, but “hide” (sometimes not so skillfully) under the name of other parties. The job of these people is to repeat the propaganda theses of the authorities.  For example, street protesters are seeking power. It seems that this is not self-evident and natural, and the CC members, in turn, do not seek to retain power, and in the spring of 2018 they did not fight for power.

But let’s see what the representatives of the opposition parties really say. They say that the agenda of both the government and the opposition on the street is wrong, and if our country follows the path proposed by both, good things will not happen to our state. We can agree with that, but in that case we have to offer our own agenda and see if the citizens are ready to follow it. If they are not ready, the conversation is useless.

In more or less democratic countries, the government elects the majority of citizens. In our case, I will avoid the word “people” because I have a better opinion of the Armenian people. The opposition also chooses the citizens, not only at the ballot box, but also, say, by participating in rallies.

Therefore, the current government has hundreds of thousands of supporters, the current radical opposition in the street struggle has tens of thousands of supporters, which is enough to talk about a severe polarization and division of society. The other parties have hundreds or thousands of supporters. If the representatives of those parties do not agree with me in terms of numbers, let them try to take their supporters to the streets. If they are more than 10,000, then I am wrong. If they are few, then no one should be offended.
