Aravot asked Tigran Abrahamyan, MP of the NA I Have Honor faction, what could have changed after November 9, 2020, when Nikol Pashinyan assured for almost two years that even a dubious normalization of relations with Azerbaijan and Turkey can bring us towards an era of lasting peace, and recently announced that peace is not so guaranteed.
“In the post-war period, as he did during the 2021 election campaign, Nikol aimed to calm the people, to vent public anger, and to show that even after all this, he would bring peace. In the post-war period, especially when countries are defeated, there is no alternative for those people other than the offer of peace. And in that case, our society did not delve into the arguments, whether in reality it was saying an argument or just making statements. About a year and a half has passed. The situation around Armenia is growing.
Azerbaijan uses the language of blackmail and threats and demands more than what was envisaged in the November 9, 2020 document. In these conditions, on the one hand, Nikol Pashinyan feels not only the general impending danger, but also the personal danger, and the increase of tension. That is, escalation. On the other hand, Nikol Pashinyan thinks that the tension and anger that existed after the war, especially during the pre-election period, is no more. And he began to ‘correct’ his promises, declaring that it was not up to him alone, and that no one could guarantee that this age of peace would succeed. It is only possible to move in the direction of a peace agenda in Armenia and Artsakh and peace can be expected only in the conditions of the existence of an efficient army. An efficient army is the most important factor in preventing threats and war in the region.
Meanwhile, the hope of this government is the discussions, the negotiations, which, in their opinion, can bring them peace. But if you do not have a state and you do not have an efficient army that solves the necessary problems, no one will take into account what you say. No one will make you the subject of the agenda. No one will be guided by your interests,” said Tigran Abrahamyan.
