This is not a newspaper debate

October 05,2022 10:30

On Sunday, a well-known “reliable source” wrote in the Armenian Times (Haykakan Zhamanak) that Azerbaijan wants the dissolution of the Artsakh Defense Army, the recognition of the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan with 0 autonomy for Artsakh, demarcation with maps of 1919-20 (it is not clear which), and a corridor across Armenian territory (it is not clear in what capacity). Regardless of whether the Azerbaijani side will respond to this or not, I assume that this is what they want, and Aliyev’s earlier statements are proof of that.

On Monday, the same source described what Russia wanted. According to the publication, that country wants Armenia to become a part of the union state or join Russia. And it is precisely to impose those decisions on us that Azerbaijan’s encroachments are encouraged by that country. Although Putin’s press secretary Peskov denied these claims, I tend to think that they are close to the truth.

But it is one thing when a private person says all that, another thing when a Reliable Source writes it. In the second case, it becomes politics, and no matter how small our country is, such steps should be considered in the context of the interests of major players in the region. It is not a newspaper debate, it is not an arena for countering Ter-Petrossian, it is one of the key issues of international politics and requires a more serious approach.

Suppose Russian peacekeepers leave Artsakh. Is there a calculation of what will follow? Suppose the price of gas becomes international. Is there a calculation of how we will organize our economy and life in that case? If all that is calculated, then disagreements with Russia should be discussed openly, without literary pseudonyms.

Otherwise, an impression may be created that publishing a sensation in the newspaper and “putting the opposition in the right place” are more important than urgent state problems.
