Samvel Babayan asks the retired presidents of Artsakh and Armenia and Arayik Harutyunyan to meet

October 07,2022 15:45

“Please, on the 9th of October, in Artsakh, let’s meet here in our city, and let’s try to find a way out of this situation,” said Samvel Babayan, the former commander of the Artsakh Armed Forces and chairman of the United Motherland party, during the rally held in Stepanakert the day before. This was addressed to the retired presidents of Artsakh and Armenia and the current president of Artsakh, Arayik Harutyunyan.

Samvel Babayan is confident and assures the gathered that no one will decide his fate instead of an Artsakh citizen. He suggested that we get stronger and stronger. The Charter of the United Nations, with its transmission, gives peoples that opportunity to defend themselves. “Today, we need to solve our security problem immediately. Our people must be safe. That’s it.” Samvel Babayan and United Motherland see the settlement of the Artsakh problem in a legal way.

“We have all the documents, I have repeatedly expressed that we should go to the international court and by suing, we will be able to establish our independence because we have no other way. We are doomed to go that way.” Samvel Babayan also made a remarkable statement, saying that the political forces of Artsakh rejected his willingness to join the call for unification that they had made. On September 2, a rally was held in Renaissance Square of Stepanakert, during which a call was made to unite and overcome the situation together. “I get in touch to respond to that call. Do you know what they said to me? They said: we sat down and decided that no, we don’t want to come. I made this gathering to make those people understand that if you really, sincerely want to come together, you don’t have to give up.”

Answering the question of one of those gathered, why he left Artsakh after the 44-day war, Samvel Babayan said that he answered that question several times. The reason is that the authorities of Artsakh agreed to the ceasefire behind his back, and at that time he was in Yerevan on a business trip. “I was not aware that the negotiations were leading to reconciliation or a declaration to stop the war. After doing so much, I learned in the evening that they will sign a document.”
