YEREVAN – United States Agency for International Development (USAID) launched a new five-year project supporting the Government of Armenia to establish a fair and equitable justice system and increase public trust in the rule of law. The Justice Sector Support Project is funded by USAID and implemented by Development Professionals, Inc.

“USAID’s Justice Sector Support Project stands ready to help Armenia resolve issues that plague the judiciary, such as an inefficient case management system, a growing backlog of cases, and a lack of transparency over court rulings,” stated USAID/Armenia Mission Director John Allelo at the launch event.

Project activities will advance the functional independence and effectiveness of the judicial branch by strengthening the effectiveness and capacity of courts, relevant self-regulatory agencies, and educational institutions, as well as by facilitating multi-stakeholder oversight of the implementation of justice sector reforms.

The launch event was attended by high level officials including John Allelo, USAID/Armenia Mission Director; Arman Dilanyan, Chief Justice of the Constitutional Court; Yeranuhi Tumanyants, Supreme Judicial Council, Grigor Minasyan, Acting Minister of Justice; Sergey Arakelyan, Rector of the Justice Academy; government representatives; and representatives of international, civil society and media organizations.

During the event, participants were invited to gather informally to continue ongoing discussions regarding the current challenges facing the judicial system and opportunities for strengthening the justice sector in Armenia.
