“I don’t remember any case where the government’s attention to Turkey was so demonstrative, so emphasized.” Diplomat

RA Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary and former Secretary General of the Foreign Ministry Vahagn Melikyan spoke about Pashinyan’s statements and Aliyev’s behavior in the discussion organized by the “Alternative Projects” group. “We have had many Munichs in 30+ years and have never faced a situation as we saw a few days ago. There was a lot of talk about being a factor. Suppose the Head of the country thinks that he is no longer a factor and is just a tool for various circles to advance their interests, and that’s why he keeps silent. In that case, I can’t say what he thinks then, and he insults the whole nation in the most cynical and humiliating way. But you don’t need to give in to sentimentality.

The problem is that the catchy keyword “peace agenda” has been brought in, and the dividing line has been made clear that we are carrying this agenda. Those who disagree with this agenda are themselves serving the war agenda and are ardent advocates of war. I will disappoint at once. I am much more inclined that this wing is a more outstanding advocate and defender of peace—the clear evidence: representatives of that wing have been working in that direction for 30+ years.

Yes, we had a fragile truce, but we did not have the large-scale war and the terrible losses from which our society still cannot recover. This widespread indifference and overall dullness is vivid proof of that. What we see today in Armenian-Turkish relations is political blindness. I don’t remember any case in history or in general where the government’s attention to that country was so demonstrative, so emphasized. A country that directly caused your current situation. That is shocking because every possible protocol or ethics red line is violated. At least they cannot come to conclusions and try to act dignifiedly.

I don’t understand where those decisions are made. I call this illiteracy, ignorance, and political blindness. Wasn’t it clear that nothing had changed in Turkey? It looks so simple. That’s why you must follow the announcements and understand what is hidden under them. And run and show that look very quickly, we’re friendly, we’ve got both hands and both feet up to go towards that solution, you were given a very clear answer: thank Azerbaijan for standing by us as we stood by Azerbaijan during the Karabakh war,” the diplomat noted.
