“Recent events have shown that Europe and the EU are Armenia’s long-term partners in the South Caucasus. Recent events have shown that Armenia cannot rely on its traditional partner for its security guarantees, as it did not help Armenia in 2020 and 2022,” declared announced during the 3rd session of the European Union-Armenia Parliamentary Partnership Committee the European External Action Service Deputy Managing Director of the Department of the European Union’s Foreign Service for Cooperation with Russia, the Eastern Partnership, Central Asia and the OSCE, Luc Devigne.

He mentioned it as a contrast. “The EU has intensified its relations in terms of engagement in the South Caucasus and improvement of relations with Azerbaijan. If Armenia continues its reforms in good governance and democracy, the EU will actively support Armenia.”

Referring to the attacks by Azerbaijan on March 5, he said. “Unfortunately, recent atrocities have shown that it is urgent to restore dialogue. The return of prisoners of war, demarcation issues, the unblocking of transport links, and in this context, the unblocking of the Lachine Corridor is also an urgent issue.” He also emphasized the direct relations between Stepanakert and Baku and said. “We also encourage direct negotiations between Baku and Stepanakert. The last match is on the right track.”

The member of the European Parliament, Robert Hajšel, emphasized the importance of respecting the territorial integrity of Armenia. “Respecting territorial integrity and fulfilling obligations under international agreements is an important prerequisite for achieving peace.

Both sides must respect these principles, especially the territorial integrity of Armenia must be guaranteed. Considering the geopolitical situation and challenges, Armenia has serious problems diversifying security systems.”

Andrey Kovatchev, the permanent rapporteur on Armenian affairs in the European Parliament, said that he had prepared a report that will be put to the vote in Strasbourg at the plenary session of the European Parliament.

“The Nagorno-Karabakh problem is an urgent issue that should always be on the agenda to have international guarantees that the safety of Armenians in Nagorno-Karabakh is ensured. The return of Armenian prisoners of war must be ensured, and the demarcation and delimitation processes must be completed along the same lines as the peace agenda.”Andrey Kovatchev also emphasized that Azerbaijan should implement the decision of the UN court and ensure the free movement of people and cargo through the Lachin Corridor. He mentioned that this issue would also be included in his prepared report.
