“Turkey is exaggerating the issue a bit and probably because of the elections, they made the issue so big,” Aravot. am asked if the current problem in Armenian-Turkish relations was due to the installation of the Nemesis Monument in Yerevan or was it just an excuse․ During a meeting with journalists in the framework of the “Turkey-Armenia Journalists’ Dialogue Program,” this is what Tigran Altun, an Armenian figure in Istanbul, answered.
He said he hoped the border would be opened for third-country nationals from July 1, but everything seemed disturbed after the Nemesis statue’s installation. Tigran Altun noted on this occasion: “If they complain about the statue, then we should also complain that there is Taleat Pasha Street and Talet Pasha School in the Armenian districts. And they didn’t put another place where Armenians live; they opened Talaat Pasha’s school there. So I have to file a complaint against Turkey for this. Just because of the elections, that issue became so complicated.”
To our other question, how effective do you consider the format of negotiations of special representatives in terms of the settlement of Armenian-Turkish relations? Tigran Altun answered: “I think that the dialogue should continue. It is impossible to get anywhere without dialogue. Armenia always fears that if the borders are opened, the Turks will come to Armenia, they will do this, they will do that; these are not realities for me. Today, RA is a country surrounded by four sides, and the only place we can get out of is Georgia and Iran. We have to find a way to live with our neighbors; this does not mean we have to leave our principles but to continue our daily life, the borders must be opened. I believe in it.”
