Arrogance has no place in foreign policy

March 06,2024 10:30

The anti-Russian paranoia now raging in Armenia reminds me of the situation in Georgia after Saakashvili came to power. At that time, in the neighboring country as well, as it is now with us, all critics of the government were “Kremlin agents” and “Putin’s spies.” Fortunately for the neighboring people, today’s Georgian government is more restrained and sober and does not look for a “Russian agency” under every bush.

The current rulers of Armenia should study the experience of their neighbors and show consideration. However, in our country, when reasonable people, even in an amicable manner, call for accountability, they are declared “slaves of Russia” and enemies of Armenia’s sovereignty.

It is evident to me that shortly, Russia will very likely “direct” Azerbaijan again, provoking clashes of one scale or another on our border. That is what Russia’s current interests demand, both in terms of “punishing” Armenia and pleasing Turkey. What conclusions the Armenian government should draw from this is the subject of extensive analysis. But the stupidest thing to do now is to incite anti-Russian hysteria.

The state is not a media where you can “severely criticize” this or that and wait for the delighted response of the audience: “Wow, how strong you are!” Even if three million people in Armenia rejoice at how Pashinyan “shows the Russians their place,” even if France, Germany, and the United States applaud the “courage” of the Prime Minister of Armenia and his team, the government must first all take care of the lives and security interests of those three million people, especially considering the current state of our country.

By the way, it is known whose fault it is.
