Ararat Mirzoyan and Omar Paganini The interlocutors commended the high level of political dialogue between Armenia and Uruguay

Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Armenia Ararat Mirzoyan, who is in Montevideo on an official visit, had a meeting with Omar Paganini, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Oriental Republic of Uruguay.

The interlocutors commended the high level of political dialogue between Armenia and Uruguay, expressing readiness to undertake steps for further enrichment of the bilateral agenda in various fields. Both sides emphasized that this historic visit of the Foreign Minister of Armenia, as well as the opening of resident embassies in the capitals of both countries, are the best evidence of the desire to deepen cooperation.

Ararat Mirzoyan and Omar Paganini emphasized the importance of developing trade, economy, and business ties in accordance with the level of political dialogue and making maximum use of new opportunities in the fields of education and high technology. Both sides emphasized the effectiveness of the mechanism of holding political consultations between the Foreign Ministries of Armenia and Uruguay, confirming the intention to hold the next consultations in Yerevan.

The Ministers also stressed the unique role of the large Armenian community in Uruguay in strengthening friendly ties between the Armenian and Uruguayan peoples. In this context, it was mentioned that Uruguay gave shelter to survivors of the Armenian Genocide at the beginning of the last century, was the first to recognize the Genocide in 1965, and today enjoys the significant contribution of Armenian figures and specialists in its social and political life.

At the meeting, the issues of cooperation on multilateral platforms within the framework of international organizations were also touched upon.

During the meeting, the security situation in the South Caucasus was also touched upon. Ararat Mirzoyan briefed his counterpart on the latest developments in the normalization process of relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan, and the ongoing negotiations on the peace treaty. The Foreign Minister of Armenia emphasised the importance of mutual and unequivocal recognition of sovereignty and territorial integrity, which should be based on the 1991 Alma-Ata Declaration and serve as a political basis for delimitation between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

In the context of unblocking regional transport and economic communications, Minister Mirzoyan presented the “Crossroads of Peace” project of the Armenian Government, the economic opportunities it provides to the South Caucasus and beyond.

Ararat Mirzoyan emphasised the importance of the international community’s adherence to the well-known principles of international law, the lack of which continuously leads to new escalations in the current, full of challenges and undermined world order. The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Armenia expressed his gratitude for Uruguay’s positions on key issues for Armenia.

Minister Mirzoyan also presented the steps taken by the Armenian Government to address the needs of the Armenian population forcibly displaced from Nagorno-Karabakh as a result of ethnic cleansing by Azerbaijan.
