Sargis Khandanian, a member of the “Civil Contract” faction of the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia and chairman of the permanent Foreign Relations Committee, wrote on his microblog on X.
“My Azerbaijani counterpart has publicly rejected my proposal for a meeting to exchange views on the draft peace agreement—going as far as calling me ‘a populist.’ If advocating for peace is populism, then I proudly embrace the label for as long as necessary. My offer remains on the table. I stand ready to engage in confidence-building measures at the inter-parliamentary level, tirelessly working for peace and stability in our region”.
Recently, Sargis Khandanian addressed the Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Relations of the Milli Majlis of Azerbaijan, Samad Seyidov, proposing a meeting between the Foreign Relations Committees of the Parliaments of Armenia and Azerbaijan.
“This meeting will create an opportunity for exchanging views on the draft peace agreement and the process of its ratification. Furthermore, it will allow for discussions on issues related to the role of parliaments in the peace process, fostering a dialogue on the future of inter-parliamentary cooperation on both bilateral and multilateral parliamentary platforms.

Such an initiative can complement other confidence-building measures undertaken by our countries and contribute to strengthening regional stability. I hope that my colleague from the Milli Majlis will respond positively, and we will be able to agree on the date, location, and other necessary details for the meeting. As a venue for the first meeting, we can consider a neutral territory along the Armenia-Azerbaijan border,” wrote Khandanian.
