Response of the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin to the event organized by Azerbaijan in Rome with an anti-Armenian agenda
On April 10, an event titled “Christianity in Azerbaijan: History and Modern Times” was held at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. It was organized by the Embassy of Azerbaijan to the Holy See, in collaboration with several Azerbaijani organizations, and attended by representatives from various countries.
During the event, Azerbaijan’s propaganda apparatus once again sought to deny the Armenian identity of the historical and cultural heritage of Armenia and Artsakh, distorting historical facts with the intent of eventual appropriation.
This event took place against the backdrop of ongoing silence surrounding Azerbaijan’s genocidal actions, the gross violations of the fundamental rights of hundreds of thousands of Armenians forcibly displaced from Artsakh, the unlawful and degrading treatment of Armenian prisoners of war held in Azerbaijani prisons, and the systematic and complete destruction of Armenian traces in Artsakh’s spiritual and cultural heritage.

We deeply regret that such an anti-academic event was hosted within a Catholic institution of higher learning.
All this is taking place at a time when the international community has not yet delivered an adequate assessment of Azerbaijan’s genocidal actions, the violation of the fundamental rights of the entire Armenian population forcibly displaced from Artsakh, the unlawful and degrading treatment of Armenian prisoners of war held in Baku’s prisons, and the appropriation and complete erasure of Armenian traces from the spiritual and cultural heritage of Artsakh.
We regret that such an anti-academic event was allowed to take place within the walls of a Catholic institution of higher education.
In this regard, the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin will initiate necessary steps within the framework of inter-church dialogue.
