Human development progress is experiencing an unprecedented slowdown according to a new Human Development Report released today by the United Nations Development Programme – UNDP. The report shows how Artificial Intelligence (AI) could reignite development.
Instead of seeing sustained recovery following the period of exceptional crises of 2020-2021, the report reveals unexpectedly weak progress.
The 2025 Human Development Report -“A matter of choice: people and possibilities in the age of Artificial Intelligence (AI)” analyses development progress across a range of indicators known as the Human Development Index (HDI), which encompasses achievements in health and education, along with levels of
income. Projections for 2024 reveal stalled progress on the HDI in all regions across the world.
The report presents the 2023 HDI for 193 countries and UN-recognized territories. Armenia’s HDI value for 2023 is 0.811 – which put the country in the high human development category – positioning it at 69 out of 193 countries and territories. Between 1990 and 2023, Armenia’s HDI value changed from 0.663 to 0.811, a change of 22.3 percent.
Between 1990 and 2023, Armenia’s life expectancy at birth changed by 8.0 years, mean years of schooling changed by 1.6 years and expected years of schooling changed by 3.2 years. Armenia’s GNI per capita changed by about 229.3 percent between 1990 and 2023.
