Genocide recognition not part of official agenda, the MFA reiterates

May 27,2025 23:54

The Armenian government reaffirms that the international recognition of the Armenian Genocide is not a priority of the country’s foreign policy. “Today, the Republic of Armenia remembers the past and looks ahead, aiming to construct for the future generations an environment based on tolerance, respect, the protection of human rights and peaceful values, free of discrimination and violence,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in response to our inquiry.

The response comes after a delay following an inquiry submitted on April 14. As previously reported on April 26, no official reply had been received at that time.

The MFA emphasizes Armenia’s participation in the genocide prevention agenda while at the same time reiterating their previously-expressed position, according to which, the recognition of the Armenian Genocide is not a priority for Armenian diplomacy.

“As we noted in our April 24, 2025, statement marking the 110th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, Armenia continues to be actively engaged in genocide prevention initiatives, especially those focused on identifying early indicators of such crimes and taking timely action to prevent them.

In April 2024, in continuation of resolutions adopted previously, the UN Human Rights Council in its 55th session adopted by consensus the Prevention of Genocide resolution subbitted by Armenia. Armenia continues to initiate and organize the global forum titled Against the Crime of Genocide, which aims to promote the the agenda of genocide prevention. The global forum was held in 2015, 2016, 2018, 2022, and 2024.

“These efforts aim to transform ‘Never Again’ from a slogan into a reality,” Hakob Sargsyan, acting head of the Media and Public Diplomacy Department of the MFA, concluded.

Context

The MFA also referenced recent interviews with Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan, given to Turkish media on March 13 and April 17 , respectively. Both officials underlined that the recognition of the Genocide is not currently part of Armenia’s diplomatic agenda.

However, this stance is not in line with the Government’s ongoing program, which identifies the international recognition of the Genocide as a priority, particularly in the context of strengthening the system of Armenia’s security guarantees.
