Armenia is studying the experience of Montenegro on its way to EU membership

On July 21-23 the delegation headed by Vahan Kostanyan, Deputy Foreign Minister of the Republic of Armenia, paid a working visit to Montenegro. The delegation also included representatives from the Security Council and the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Armenia. The aim of the visit was to study the steps Montenegro is taking towards EU membership and the process of harmonization of Montenegro’s legislation with the EU acquis, its alignment of the EU’s sectoral standards, as well as exploring the possibilities for the application and implementation of these practices in Armenia.

During the visit, meetings were held with Predrag Zenović, Chief Negotiator of Montenegro with the EU, and representatives from key agencies involved in the negotiations on Montenegro’s EU accession, such as Petar Koprivica, State Secretary of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Blagoje Gledovic, Director General of the Directorate for International Cooperation and International Legal Assistance of the Ministry of Justice, Periša Kastratović, State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ivan Vuković, Chair of the European Integration Committee of the Parliament of Montenegro and Gordana Đurović, President of the Montenegrin Pan-European Union.

The Armenian side briefed on the recent achievements in Armenia-EU relations and the efforts towards aligning with the EU legislation and standards in the sectoral areas of the Comprehensive and Enhanced Partnership Agreement (CEPA), the legal basis of the Armenia-EU relations. The Armenia-EU new Partnership Agenda was also discussed.

The “Law on the Launch of Armenia’s EU Accession Process,” reflecting the European aspirations of the Armenian people, was presented to the interlocutors.

During the meetings the sides touched upon the policies and reforms implemented by Montenegro within the framework of the visa liberalization process.

The delegation headed by the Deputy Foreign Minister also met with Filip Ivanović, the Deputy Prime Minister for Foreign and European Affairs, Ervin Ibrahimović, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Montenegro and Maida Gorčević, the Minister of European Affairs.

Taking into account Montenegro’s significant experience and the success in the EU accession negotiations, the parties agreed to continue cooperation on issues of mutual interest in deepening relations with the EU.
