ARMENIAN ASSEMBLY OF AMERICA STATEMENT ON ARMENIA’S INDEPENDENCE DAY
Washington, D.C. – On September 21, 1991, the Armenian people, united in spirit and determination, declared and secured their long-cherished independence. Armenians across the diaspora, throughout the former Soviet Union, and resolutely in Nagorno-Karabakh, stood together in solidarity.
Much has transpired since that historic day, yet the source of our common purpose endures. A free Armenia, secure within its borders, remains the aspiration that unites us all. While there are many reasons to debate and disagree over policies, events, and international agreements adopted by successive governments, none can diminish the significance of the choice made on that September day 34 years ago.
In light of all that has followed, it is all the more vital to reclaim the pride and strength that inspired the Armenian people to act then—and to draw renewed inspiration from their example. Let us rekindle our sense of fraternity, common purpose, and unity in tribute to that generation, which stood shoulder to shoulder against fear, oppression, and domination.
