Armenian fans displayed a banner reading, “Welcome to Armenia, here you can sleep safely,” during the Armenia vs Hungary match, a pointed reference to the brutal 2004 murder of Armenian officer Gurgen Margaryan in Budapest.
That year, Azerbaijani serviceman Ramil Safarov killed Margaryan with an axe while he slept during a NATO training program. Safarov was later extradited to Azerbaijan, where he was immediately pardoned, released, and hailed as a national hero.
