Alaverdi, Lori region, 26 November 2025 – The newly renovated Alaverdi House of Culture officially opened its doors today, marking a significant milestone in the city’s cultural and community development. The opening ceremony brought together representatives from the European Union (EU), the Government of Armenia, the Embassy of Sweden, UNDP, local authorities, and community members.

The renovation was made possible through the collaborative efforts and co-financing of the Government of Armenia, Alaverdi Municipality, the EU-funded “Mayors for Economic Growth” (M4EG) Facility implemented by UNDP, and the “Strengthening Community Stability through Energy Efficiency and Low-Emission Development” project, financed by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida) and implemented by UNDP.

Vassilis Maragos, EU Ambassador to Armenia, Natia Natsvlishvili, UNDP Resident Representative in Armenia, Sara Öberg Höper, Deputy Head of Development Cooperation, Embassy of Sweden to Armenia, and Davit Ghumashyan, Head of Alaverdi Community, attended the opening ceremony that featured a ribbon-cutting ceremony, a tour of the renovated facility, a film presentation on Alaverdi, and cultural performances by local creative groups.

“The European Union is proud to support initiatives that foster local development and cultural renewal. For EU investing in cultural spaces means investing in people — especially in youth, talent, and future opportunities. The transformation of the Alaverdi House of Culture demonstrates the power of collaboration between local authorities, international partners, and the community residents,” said Vassilis Maragos, EU Ambassador to Armenia.

“The reopening of the Alaverdi House of Culture stands as a testament to the power of partnership and innovation in revitalizing communities and creating inclusive, resilient urban spaces” said Natia Natsvlishvili, UNDP Resident Representative in Armenia, expressing gratitude to all donors and partners for their significant contributions to strengthening local capacities and revitalizing urban life in Alaverdi.

“Sweden is committed to supporting sustainable and inclusive development in Armenia. The energy-efficient renovation of the House of Culture is a model for how we can build resilient communities and create opportunities for all,” said Sara Öberg Höper, Deputy Head of Development Cooperation, Embassy of Sweden to Armenia.

“The reopening of the House of Culture is a testament to what we can achieve through partnership and shared vision. This space will once again become the heart of our community, bringing people together for cultural, educational, and social events,” said Davit Ghumashyan, Head of Alaverdi Community.

The Alaverdi House of Culture, once dormant for many years, has been transformed into a vibrant space for concerts, theatrical performances, film screenings, official meetings, and community events. The venue will also host the Lori International Theater Festival, further enhancing the region’s cultural life.
