Members of Standing Committee on Protection of Human Rights and Public Affairs meet with OSCE/ODIHR experts

On February 3, the experts from the Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) Dinara Dildabekova, Ajla van Heel Merdanović and Laura Simonyan visited the RA National Assembly to carry out a national assessment of gender policy in Armenia.

The Deputy Chair of the NA Standing Committee on Protection of Human Rights and Public Affairs Rustam Bakoyan, the deputies of the Civil Contract Faction Marina Ghazaryan and Ester Ayvazyan met with the experts.

After a number of planned meetings and discussions the experts will prepare a report, which will include, in particular, both the views expressed during the meetings and the recommendations.

“It is very important for us to hear your opinions and viewpoints, which will enable us to understand the reality and make our work easier when we prepare the report,” the experts Dinara Dildabekova noted.

During the meeting a reference was made to the issues of the women’s participation in the political life of the Republic of Armenia, the equality rights of women and men.

Rustam Bakoyan presented the fields of the Committee’s activities, particularly highlighted the participation and involvement of women in the work of the committee.

Speaking about the situation of the gender policy in Armenia, the Deputy Chair of the Committee touched upon the legislative changes made for solving the existing problems, distinguishing the increase in the age limit for marriage. The legislative initiatives aimed at protecting persons subjected to domestic and family violence were mentioned. The MPs presented the draft laws that are in the development phase.

The legislators, in general, effectively assessed in the work being done in the field.
