It’s crucial to give a real chance to diplomacy to preserve peace in the Middle East: Zhirayr Ananyan

Mr. Zhirayr Ananyan, Deputy Permanent Representative of the Republic of Armenia to the United Nations, participated in the UN Security Council Open Debate on «Situation in the Middle East» held under the Presidency of Bahrain, making a statement outlining Armenia’s approaches on the developments in the region of the Middle East.

It was stated with grave concern that the recent military escalation in Armenia’s immediate neighbourhood has led to human casualties, destruction of civilian infrastructure and damage to renowned world heritage sites.

Armenia’s Deputy Permanent Representative highlighted that the leadership of the Republic of Armenia had been in close contact with governments of countries affected by the war and the message of the Armenian side has been clear: diplomacy and negotiations are the only way forward to address all the issues.

Zhirayr Ananyan emphasized that the Republic of Armenia has welcomed the decision between Iran and the United States to cease hostilities and move towards de-escalation adding that it’s crucial to give a real chance to diplomacy to resolve all outstanding issues and preserve peace in the Middle East.

Expressing deep concern over the humanitarian situation in Lebanon, the importance of ensuring the security and full rights of Christian communities was underscored. The parties were also urged to take all measures to ensure the safety of peacekeeping personnel and premises stressing that those responsible for attacks against the UNIFIL personnel must be held accountable.
