Raffi Hovhannisian comments on the election of the National Assembly Speaker

After the election of the National Assembly Speaker, Larisa Alaverdyan said that despite four votes, she was happy with the result. Today, Raffi Hovhannisian, the Heritage Party leader, was the guest at “Golden Tulip” club and in response to the question of Aravot.am “what did you conclude from that election, that ARF was not opposition?” he said, “I think that ARF and the Armenian National Congress (ANC) are opposition, I think many other parties and the majority of the people are opposition and it is necessary that this oppositions united around a democratic national agenda whether it is March 1, human rights, right to the freedom of speech or recognition of Artsakh, those forces that perceive themselves as opposition must support the same agenda. I don’t know what Mrs. Larisa hinted at in terms of election results, I cannot say, I would like the alternative candidate to win more votes, I expected that both our colleagues from ARF and independent thinking MPs would be there. Despite the Heritage Party may dislike a statement of the leader of ARF or Congress or any other force, perceive it wrong, however, vote for the right, in good conscience. In any case, I would have voted for the ARF candidate with pleasure, if they had nominated an alternative candidate.”

Mr. Hovhannisian also informed that they had decided to propose Larisa Alaverdyan’s candidacy at the last moment, it had not been discussed a few days before. However he wasn’t convinced that the preparation in advance would have changed the election results anyway.
