The 20-Year-Old Youth Who Had a Sexual Intercourse With a 14-Year-Old Girl Was Condemned to 6 Months in Prison

On November 28, the trial court of the Tavush Region (Judge Samvel Mardanyan) condemned Roman Zakaryan, 20-year-old resident of the town of Berd, to 6 months in prison in open court according to Article 141 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Armenia – it is a felony for anyone over 18 years of age to have a sexual intercourse with a person beneath 16 years of age punishable by community service for not more than two years or by imprisonment for not more than two years.

R. Zakaryan got acquainted with G. H., a 14-year-old resident of Berd, at the beginning of October, 2012, to make friends. Meeting on October 11, at around 8 p.m., they went to no. 2 nursery school of the town of Berd, the entrance of which was open due to renovation.

Knowing in advance that the girl was a minor, 14 years of age, R. Zakaryan had a sexual intercourse with her on the benches of the first floor with her consent.

Before the trial began, consulting with his counselor, R. Zakaryan had stated that he admitted the charge and had filed a motion to the court to have a speedy trial.

Let us note that R. Zakaryan has completed secondary education, hasn’t been convicted in the past and is not married.
