An Armenian National Congress (ANC) Member Party Will Not Support Bagratyan

January 14,2013 11:21

The Democratic Motherland Party, a member of the ANC, drew up a working document on how to get the Congress out of the crisis during its political council meeting yesterday. Petros Makeyan, the leader of the party, said to www.aravot.am that the political council made a decision not to make that document public until the Congress discussed it.

Besides that document, the party also made a decision on how it would participate in the upcoming election. Mr. Makeyan didn’t go into detail about this either, explaining that they would make a statement in the next few hours.

“The statement is a description of the situation. For the moment, we devised a theoretical way of changing the situation in the election,” Mr. Makeyan said.

In response to our question whether their party would support Hrant Bagratyan, the Freedom Party leader, Mr. Makeyan said that he respected him and thought of his nomination as normal. “Given the fact that the Democratic Motherland Party and the Freedom Party have been jointly working in the ANC, the party members are free to support Bagratyan, but it was not mentioned in the political statement, because our party thinks that a center of power should be formed in our country to change the current situation. Certainly, it is hard to do now, but we found a theoretical way during yesterday’s discussion.”

Let us remind that two ANC member parties have already made statements, in which they contradict the ANC decision not to endorse any candidate. The Christian Democratic Renaissance Party stated it had decided to endorse the “candidacy of H. Bagratyan, the leader of the Freedom Party, an ANC member-partner.” And the Human Rights-96 Party executive committee welcomed the decision of the Freedom Party congress “to nominate H. Bagratyan, a member of the ANC political council, as a candidate for president.”
