Today, representatives of a number of organizations not being invited to high-level conference on “Combating Racism, Xenophobia and Intolerance in Europe” held in “Marriott Hotel” hold a protest action in front of the hotel since morning. Human rights activist Mikael Danielyan said on this occasion, “Hardly, if I were invited, have entered inside, because it is cynical for me when they are DIY club events in the country, attacks on LGBT leaders. And now, holding and organizing such a conference is just cynical.” During the speech of the Armenian Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandyan, the participants of the protest also intruded into the conference hall, which was attended by Thorbjørn Jagland, Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Jonas Gunnersson, head of Equality and Non-discrimination Committee, Nils Muizhniks, Commissioner for Human Rights of the Council of Europe and other European high-rank officials.
Aravot.am asked Jonas Gunnersson how he evaluates such a move of activists. He answered, “I evaluate it as an event that took place. They expressed their opinions, to which they have the right.” To our question whether it is a common phenomenon to express protest like that or it was a surprise, Mr. Gunnersson said, “The protest actions, of course, happen in all European countries, of course, not in the conference halls and during the discussions. I think both parties demonstrated well. Protesters allowed the Minister to make his speech, which speaks about respect, on the other hand, the leadership allowed the activists to stay in the hall and express their opinions.”
