The Ordinary Session of the Euronest Parliamentary Assembly took place from December 7th to December 10th. During this conference, the Azeri delegation spoke about the “political persecutions in Armenia” and received a response from the members of the Armenian delegation. “They tried to say that political persecutions are taking place in Armenia, but, of course, no one took them seriously. Everyone knows about the political activities that are taking place in Armenia, as well as the administrative levers that are in place in Azerbaijan,” member of the Armenian delegation and My Step deputy Mikayel Zolyan told journalists.
As far as how the Azeri delegation tried to take advantage of the situation, Zolyan said, “They simply retorted that ‘let’s not speak about political persecution, because we all know that it’s taking place in Armenia.’ That was in response to our speeches where we criticized Azerbaijan from a human rights standpoint. We also reminded them of Aliyev’s statement that Europe is full of Islamophobia and that there is no difference between men and women in Europe.”
Another member of the Armenian delegation to Euronest and a deputy of the My Step faction, Gayane Abrahamyan, said that Azerbaijan’s retorts did not contain any facts. “They cannot prove the statement that, ‘let’s not speak about human rights in Armenia, otherwise we will not have enough time…’”
According to Gayane Abrahamyan, when the delegation reminded the Azeris of Aliyev’s statement, the attendees were surprised and asked, “Aliyev said something like that?” And as proof, Gayane Abrahamyan sent her colleagues links of where Aliyev made such a statement.
