Arsen Torosyan: ‘The system is expanding similar to wartime’

April 02,2020 20:30

On April 1st, 328 samples were taken, of which 92 tested positive for the coronavirus. More than half of those people were either in quarantine or in self-quarantine because they had come into contact with previously confirmed cases. Minister of Health Arsen Torosyan spoke about this at the Armenian Unified Infocenter. He said that there are new sources of the virus that came from Armenian citizens who returned from other countries. Torosyan said that they had been discovered a while ago and their circle of contact is currently being determined. According to Torosyan, they did not come into contact with many people.

“However, taking into consideration the current data, we need to be even more careful. We should not panic, but we all need to follow orders to stay home and follow proper hygiene,” the minister said. He said that we will be able to stop the spread of the virus by following these orders.

The minister said that two citizens were released after being treated for the coronavirus. He hopes that the number of treated citizens will increase soon as the 14-day time limit is coming up.

According to Torosyan, there are 16 hotels and other accommodations where citizens who have the virus are staying. Some of them are handling the illness well, and others are simply those who have come into contact with them. The minister said that everything is being done to make sure that these hotels are equipped with the proper professionals. “The system is expanding similar to wartime. We are mobilizing in order to conquer our common enemy. In this case, we have to mobilize these kinds of resources,” the minister said.

Nine hospitals are completely involved in the fight against the coronavirus. The largest, St. Grigor Lusavorich, will take the largest burden upon itself starting tomorrow. This hospital has the highest number of beds in Armenia. The minister said that only the inpatient unit of the hospital will be included in this. The polyclinic and the maternity ward will operate, but these units are far away from the inpatient unit, which means that there is no danger of the virus spreading. There are other hospitals that have prepared to fight against the virus from scratch.

According to official data, there are 663 cases of the coronavirus in Armenia as of April 1st.
