Marina Kaljurand stressed that the Armenian prisoners of war and civilian detainees held in Azerbaijan should be released immediately

Today, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan received Marina Kaljurand, the Co-Chair of the EU-Armenia Parliamentary Partnership Committee, and Markéta Gregorová, Member of the Committee.

The Prime Minister welcomed the visit of the representatives of the Armenia-EU Parliamentary Partnership Committee to our country and highlighted the inter-parliamentary cooperation. “Armenia attaches great importance to closer cooperation with the European Union in various dimensions and this platform is important for advancing Armenia’s democratic agenda,” Nikol Pashinyan said. The Prime Minister thanked Mrs. Kaljurand for making favorable statements for the Armenian side in the European Parliament after the 2020 war, including for referring to the issue of the return of Armenian prisoners of war.

Thanking the Prime Minister for the reception, Marina Kaljurand emphasized that Armenia is a strong partner of the EU Eastern Partnership program, the EU supports our country in the implementation of the reform agenda and the development of democracy. She assessed the cooperation with the Armenian counterpart, the Armenian Co-chair of the Armenian-EU Parliamentary Partnership Committee Arman Yeghoyan as effective and noted that she will continue the active work for the development of the Armenia-EU relations.

During the meeting, the sides exchanged views on regional and international security issues. The Prime Minister referred to the agreements reached as a result of the meetings mediated by international partners, noting that Armenia attaches greate importance to peace and stability in the region. Nikol Pashinyan presented Armenia’s positions on regional developments, unblocking of communication routes, demarcation and delimitation of the Armenian-Azerbaijani border, the Armenia-Turkey dialogue process.

Ms. Kaljurand once again stressed that the Armenian prisoners of war and civilian detainees held in Azerbaijan should be released immediately, and she will continue to raise this issue. Both sides stressed the need to ensure the entry of international humanitarian organizations to Nagorno Karabakh in order to preserve the Armenian historical, cultural and religious heritage.

Issues related to the democratic agenda of the Republic of Armenia were also raised. The sides referred to the mechanisms of combating serious insults, misinformation, government-civil society dialogue, involvement of women in various spheres of public life, etc.
