The bar of our dreams

March 30,2023 10:33

When people do not have enough knowledge, they believe in miracles, and they demand a miracle as proof that a person is different from them, superior to them. It’s not just people who act like that. “Then the tempter, Satan, approached him and said: “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread” (Matthew, 4:3). In another place in the Gospel, it is said that King Herod also had similar expectations from Christ. “When Herod saw Jesus, he was thrilled, having heard about him very often; he wanted to see him for a long time and hoped that he would perform a miracle in his presence. Herod asked Jesus many questions but did not answer” (Luke, 23:8,9).

There are similar plots in other spiritual teachings. When the prophet came to one of the cities, the inhabitants suspected that he was an ordinary person like them or a deceiver, and demanded: “Send down for us a piece of heaven, if you are of the people who speak the truth” (Qur’an, 26:186,187). Naturally, no one meets such demands.

Those plots are certainly about human ignorance. And more specifically, about the limitations of people’s desires and dreams. The old woman in Pushkin’s famous fairy tale kept raising the bar for her desires. Still, the culprit, in my opinion, was more her husband, who had to personally ask the goldfish (which is allegorically God) for wisdom. Other problems are solved automatically.

Among them, miracles can happen.
