A Christian Cannot Say, “It Would Have Been Better If You Had Died”

May 20,2026 10:00

Nikol Pashinyan insists that he is a follower of the Armenian Apostolic Church. However, I believe that in reality he is not a follower of any Christian faith. I am not entirely certain that my perception is correct, and I would like to hear the opinion of clergymen, but it seems to me that no Christian should ever ask another person the following cruel question: “Why didn’t you die?” Only someone belonging to a satanic cult or sect could ask such a question.

And it does not matter whose death is being wished for — even if it is the worst criminal or a deranged murderer. Such people should, of course, be isolated from society, perhaps even for life, but to long for their death, in my view, runs contrary to Christian values. Even the most terrible wrongdoer, even in prison, should be given a chance, and we cannot know how or at what moment “metanoia” — spiritual repentance and transformation — may occur.

I have always supported the idea that a genuine Christian Democratic movement should emerge in Armenia, so that democracy would not be treated as a checklist of mandatory requirements — a kind of test on which we are expected to report to European institutions, often resorting to distortions and presenting black as white.

In fairness, previous governments behaved in much the same way. Back then, however, the “European overseers,” fortunately, did not take rosy reports at face value. Now, when the authorities’ legal arbitrariness and political repression have reached their highest point in 35 years of independence, when the prime minister, instead of speaking with voters during the election campaign, lashes out at them and threatens his political opponents with state repression, it is precisely now that the “watchdogs” insist that a democratic paradise has been established in our country.

But I see democracy differently. It excludes, for example, moral terror directed at people who have fallen on hard times and lost their homes and property. Democracy excludes personal attacks and targeting family members during political debates.

…I sincerely and wholeheartedly wish good health to all members of Civil Contract and their families, but they conduct themselves not as Christians, but as representatives of a satanic cult.
