Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi demanded that the Russian side dismantle the Victory over Japan Memorial in Khabarovsk.

“On September 4, in the city of Khabarovsk, Russia, an unveiling ceremony was held for a bronze statue of the Victory over Japan Memorial, depicting a Soviet soldier destroying a boundary marker imprinted with the Chrysanthemum Crest.

In particular, the Chrysanthemum Crest is widely recognized as a crest symbolizing Japan, and the installation of a memorial depicting its destruction is utterly unacceptable.

This is an issue concerning the feelings of the Japanese people, and as the government, we have strongly requested the Russian side to halt the installation and remove it.

We will continue to strongly urge its removal.

On September 4, in the city of Khabarovsk, an opening ceremony was held for a bronze monument on the theme of “victory over Japan,” depicting a Soviet soldier smashing a stone pillar bearing the imprint of the chrysanthemum emblem. The chrysanthemum emblem is widely recognized as a symbol of Japan, and the installation of a monument depicting its destruction is absolutely unacceptable. This affects the sentiments of the Japanese people, and the Government of Japan has firmly demanded that the Russian side suspend the installation of the monument and dismantle it.

We intend to continue insistently calling on the Russian side to dismantle the boundary marker,” Takaichi Sanae wrote on X.
