September 30,2026 12:56

Two Armenian universities have been included in the World University Rankings 2027: Yerevan State University and the European University of Armenia, both ranked in the 2001+ range.

Overall, 2,297 universities from 118 countries and territories appeared in this year’s rankings, up from 2,191 last year.

In first place for a record 11th consecutive year is the University of Oxford, but it was ahead of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) by the slimmest of margins, with historic incumbents apparently at a tipping point across the board.

Although Oxford performed well on research productivity, international co-authorship and doctorate-staff ratio, MIT displayed a better student-staff ratio, higher citation impact and better research strength score. In terms of overall scores, the point difference between the two institutions is just 0.1.

The Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2027 show Asian campuses resuming their march up the table after a brief pause last year, suggesting that the longstanding world order could be on the brink of definitive change.

Meanwhile Asia’s leading institution, China’s Tsinghua University, overtook Switzerland’s ETH Zurich for 11th place, just missing out on a spot in the top 10. This means the highest-ranked Asian university now outranks the top university in mainland Europe.

Beijing Normal University ranks 128th.
