Hayravank, Gegharkunik – The Center for Agribusiness and Rural Development (CARD) Foundation, with the support of USAID, opened a new Farm and Veterinary Service Center in the Hayravank community of Gegharkunik province. The facility was opened under the framework of the USAID-funded Development of Private Extension Service System in Armenia (DPESSA) project. The new specialized center will provide area veterinarians, farmers, and agribusinesses with technical and business assistance to address animal health and husbandry issues.

The official launch ceremony of the Farm and Veterinary Service Center was held on October 20. Attending were Armenian Minister of Agriculture Sergo Karapetyan, USAID Armenia Mission Director Karen Hilliard, Governor of Gegharkunik Rafik Grigoryan, and representatives of USAID, CARD and the local community.

The new center is designed to be a regional hub, disseminating advanced farm business techniques throughout the region. The center will strengthen local skills and help bring best practices to those providing farm and veterinary services as well as animal breeding and husbandry. The center will also facilitate the development of new market contacts and help locals access finance services. The center will host regular workshops and training programs led by Armenian and foreign experts. They plan to serve more than 2,000 local farmers from 10 communities in Gegharkunik.

This is the first FVSC established by the Center for Agribusiness and Rural Development under the USAID-funded program. The opening of the second center in Vardenis, Gegharkunik, is anticipated in the coming week.
