“The EU is trying to activate its policy in the region.” A political analyst

October 20,2015 15:15

Political analyst Hrant Melik-Shahnazaryan considers the growing tension in the Armenian-Azerbaijani border a consequence of the recent Turkish-Azerbaijani mutual military visits a result of the. “The punitive actions carried out by the Armenian army in the last two months partly have suspended the activeness of Azerbaijan. But Turkey is trying to make every possible effort to create new problems in the adjacent regions having vital importance for the Russian Federation, thus trying to prevent the military actions carried out in Syria by Russia,” opines the political analyst.

In his opinion, the meeting of foreign ministers of Armenia and Azerbaijan hosted in New York did not give any results, therefore the meeting of the presidents of Azerbaijan and Armenia becomes unlikely. “At the same time, it is clear that the Azerbaijani logic – peace in exchange for territories, can no longer function because Azerbaijan showed everybody with its actions that there cannot be a peace exporting country … The actions currently carried out by Armenia’s Defense Ministry are the only hope for our peace. In this sense, our diplomacy lags behind.”

Back to the foreign political developments, the political analyst noted that the EU is trying to activate its policy in the region. “The Armenia-EU negotiating mandate proves that the Europe is not going to give up its activity in the post-Soviet region.” Recall that on October 12, in Luxembourg, the EU 28 member states provided a mandate to launch negotiations for signing a new agreement between Armenia and EU.
