June 08,2018 18:06

EU Sustainable Energy Week (EUSEW) 2018 is taking place from 4 to 8 June. The theme this year is ‘Lead the clean energy transition’.

EU Commissioner for Climate Action and Energy, Miguel Arias Cañete, opened the policy conference on 5 June in Brussels, which was followed by the annual EU Sustainable Energy Awards ceremony.

12 projects across 4 categories (Consumers, Public Sector, Young Energy Leaders and Businesses) made it onto the awards shortlist this year. The Citizens’ Award, voted for by the public in the weeks leading up to EUSEW 2018, was also presented to one of the 12 nominees.

In his keynote speech, Commissioner Arias Cañete confirmed that the Commission will be launching a public consultation in the next few weeks in order to prepare the long-term strategy document on greenhouse gas emission reductions in accordance with the Paris agreement, as requested by EU leaders. To coincide with this consultation, the Commission is organising a major stakeholder conference on 10 and 11 July 2018.

Other activities taking place in Brussels include a chance to share ideas and good practices in a ‘Networking Village’ on 6-7 June. In addition to these events in Brussels, a number of Energy Days are being organised all over Europe, including in the Eastern Partner countries – Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine – throughout the months of May and June, giving citizens and businesses the opportunity to discover the latest developments in sustainable energy.
