The Delegation of European Union in Armenia in cooperation with the Ministry of Sport and Youth Affairs of the RA and the Basketball Federation of Armenia organized 3×3 Street Basketball Tournament in frames of European Week of Sports initiative. The tournament took place on Sunday, 30 September on Northern Avenue, Yerevan, Armenia. The purpose of the event was to promote healthy and active lifestyle.

H.E. Mr. Piotr Antoni Switalski, Ambassador, the Head of the Delegation of the European Union to Armenia noted “We are sure that this event which takes place in the center of Yerevan, at the Northern Avenue will promote healthy lifestyle. We enjoyed a spectacular tournament”.

Deputy Minister of Sport and Youth Affairs of the Republic of Armenia Gabriel Ghazaryan mentioned “The Ministry of Youth and Sports Affairs closely cooperates with the EU Delegation to Armenia. And we have held several event in frames of this cooperation already. This event will be a strong trigger to develop Basketball in Armenia”.

40 teams registered for the tournament, 2 of which were inclusive, and 2 of them consisted of girls. The event was held according to FIBA rules. Through 6-hour long tournament NWO (New World Order) played a winning game with 21-17 results.

“We are a team of doctors. We also have non-Armenian members. I really hope this event will be annual and we will have the opportunity to enjoy the basketball “party” again”,- Aram Hekimyan, the leader of the team told.

The game of the inclusive teams were held among the AIN (Ministry of Emergency Situations) and Azhdahak. The latter was announced the winner.

“We are really happy to participate in the tournament. It is especially inspiring that there are no limitations for participation”,- Sevak Mkhitaryan, the team leader of Azhdahak noted.

The ceremony of awards was followed by a surprise. H.E. Mr. Piotr Switalski played a symbolic game with the winning team.

This event of EU Week of Sports is especially exciting as 3×3 Street Basketball is claimed to be the most popular street game worldwide.
