‘People forgave Pashinyan for everything so that the former regime would not get reelected’

June 28,2021 16:00

During the snap parliamentary election campaigns, the heart of Bright Armenia’s statements was the establishment of internal solidarity. Bright Armenia leader Edmon Marukyan regularly stressed that no force should become the majority, the former and current regimes should not win, otherwise they will continue to destroy each other and the people will emigrate. Aravot Daily spoke to Bright Armenia party member Gevorg Gorgisyan.

– Gorgisyan, as it is known, only members of the former and present regimes will be in the parliament. In your analysis, why did society not give preference to your agenda of forming a government of solidarity and national accord as a result of the elections?

The public evaluated our solidarity agenda quite positively, and we proved it during the campaign. However, on the last day, when the Gallup polls actually falsified that Kocharyan was winning and they held that powerful rally, what we had predicted months ago happened. At that time, Edmon Marukyan told the former regime in his speech to not allow Pashinyan’s regime to be reproduced. Step aside and see how we will defeat him. They did not listen to us. What happened happened. People are afraid that they will come back …… We have carried out analyses even after the elections. Citizens in different administrative districts and regions of Yerevan came to our offices and said, “Sorry, we wanted to elect you, but when we saw that Kocharyan could come back, we went and chose Nikol so that the former regime would not come back.” And here those old men have a lot to think about- how bad they were and what they did that people were so afraid of them that they were ready to forgive Nikol, that they were ready to forgive the deaths caused by COVID and the war, the loss of territories, the destruction of state institutions, and corruption in the education system. People forgave Pashinyan for everything so that the former regime would not get reelected. There is something to think about here. Maybe they would really leave the political field and the arena to the new forces, and we would be able to defeat Pashinyan normally. It did not happen.

– Why didn’t it happen? In your opinion, why did they enter the political struggle? Did they not realize the possibility of reproduction?

I think they overestimated themselves.  In fact, there was no change of government in the country, but a change of the opposition.  The former authorities became the opposition, and this is the opposition of Nikol Pashinyan’s dreams. Can you imagine when Pashinyan is told that the educational reforms have failed, there will be an answer: you stole the money for education for thirty years, you stole the money for the army … this will be a debate about nothing. This will be Nikol Pashinyan’s “comfort zone.”

He could not be in a better state than this.
