/TASS/. Western nations should take Moscow’s interests into account while discussing a peaceful solution of the situation in Ukraine in order to prevent Russia from becoming ‘an outpost of China in Europe’, former US secretary of state and national security adviser Henry Kissinger said in an interview to Sunday Times.

“The question will now be how to end that war. At its end a place has to be found for Ukraine and a place has to be found for Russia — if we don’t want Russia to become an outpost of China in Europe,” he said.

Speaking about NATO, the veteran diplomat said it was important to preserve the alliance, which is “reflecting European and American collaboration in an almost unique way.” However, he added that “it’s important to recognize that the big issues are going to take place in the relations of the Middle East and Asia to Europe and America.”

“They [NATO members] came together on Ukraine because that was reminiscent of [older] threats and they did very well, and I support what they did,” he said.

On February 24, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a special military operation in Ukraine following a request from the heads of the Donbass republics. The Russian leader stressed that Moscow had no plans to occupy Ukrainian territories and the goal was to demilitarize and denazify the country. In response, the West imposed major sanctions on Russia. In addition, Western countries started to provide weapons and military equipment to Kiev, whose total value is currently estimated in billions of dollars.
