Armenia has the right to be a candidate for membership of the European Union, Lead Spokesperson for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy of the European Commission of the EU Peter Stano told Izvestia.
“Countries are entitled to aspire to a better future for their people. They are free to decide how to secure such a future. As for EU membership, each European country – its people and government – should decide whether it wants to apply for EU membership,” he said, answering the question of whether the EU’s doors are open to Armenia.
He recalled that once a country applies for EU membership, it is examined by the member states, which then take a decision “on the basis of the EU treaties and established criteria”.
On March 13, the European Parliament adopted a resolution calling on the Union to consider granting Armenia candidate status.
