NYT publishes assembly letter on Armenian genocide

June 15,2016 15:38

Armenian Assembly of America (Assembly) Executive Director Bryan Ardouny submitted a Letter to the Editor, applauding The New York Times editorial entitled, “Yes, It’s Genocide,” published on June 3rd.

The editorial was written in response to the resolution, passed overwhelmingly by the German National Parliament on June 2nd, declaring that the systematic massacre of Armenians by Ottoman Turks in 1915 was a genocide.

The Armenian Assembly of America, along with the Armenian American community, welcomed the near unanimous vote in Germany, affirming the Armenian Genocide.

Ardouny wrote:

“Yes, it’s genocide,” (editorial, June 3) highlighted the absurdity of Turkey’s tactics in response to the Bundestag’s consideration and overwhelming adoption of a resolution affirming the Armenian genocide.

Shedding light on past crimes against humanity isn’t designed to embarrass Turkey but is important in its own right to learn from the past and help prevent future genocides.

Turkey, rather than continuing its decades-long genocide denial campaign, has an opportunity to learn from Germany’s example. Germany rightly owned up to the Holocaust and is a better country for it. Turkey can do the same with respect to the Armenian genocide.
