World-famous weightlifter from Gyumri Yuri Vardanyan died this morning in the United States, according to information passed on to Aravot.am.

He was 62 years old, and according to officials from Shirak, he had been in poor health lately.

The legendary weightlifter moved to the United States in 1991, but he returned to Armenia in 2009 and was appointed Advisor to the President. He was then appointed Minister of Sport and Youth Affairs in 2013. Then, in 2014, he was appointed Armenia’s Ambassador to Georgia.
